Milly peered around the interior of the Homestead family barn, leaning past posts and walls, rifle at the ready. She returned to the cardboard box.
She was right to be wary. The box hadn’t been there before. Who had placed it?
Inside, Milly found old, printed wedding photographs of a blonde woman with a tall man. Their marriage license held the same last name as Father: Ambrose. Dated a few years later was their divorce decree.
An 8x10” glossy headshot of that same woman, smiling with makeup and big hair, showed a different last name, a “stage name”: Newhouse.
Milly deduced: “Grandmother. An actress.”
In the hospital, Milly chose “Newhouse” for herself, a new name, remember?
